Sandy is a city located in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States, and named
after the nearby Sandy River. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total
population of 5,386, however the 2006 estimate shows 7,070 people.
The city serves as the western gateway to the Mount Hood Corridor.
Geography
Sandy is located at 45°23'51" North, 122°15'59" West (45.397499,
-122.266319)GR1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.8
km˛ (2.6 mi˛), none of which is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there are 5385 people in the city, organized into
1956 households and 1431 families. The population density is 790.6/km˛
(2,044.9/mi˛). There are 2,080 housing units at an average density of 305.4/km˛
(789.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 93.91% White, 1.15% African
American, 0.74% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 1.65% from
other races, and 2.14% from two or more races. 4.09% of the population are
Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,956 households out of which 42.9% have children under the age of 18
living with them, 56.0% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female
householder with no husband present, and 26.8% are non-families. 21.4% of all
households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is
65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average
family size is 3.18.
In the city the population is spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 8.3%
from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who are 65
years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there
are 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $42,115, and the median income
for a family is $52,543. Males have a median income of $41,141 versus $25,604

mile radius of the city along various well-populated rural roads, as well as

97055 ZIP code, which includes land outside the city limits, was 16,370.
Education
There are three schools within Sandy's city limits: Sandy Grade School, Cedar
Ridge Middle School and Sandy High School. Those schools are administered by the
regional Oregon Trail School District.
Transportation
U.S. Route 26 runs through the middle of Sandy, forming downtown Sandy's Pioneer
and Proctor Boulevards. Sandy is the northern terminus of Oregon Route 211.
Sandy operates a public transit system called the Sandy Area Metro.

Sandy has a city-run Internet utility called SandyNet, which provides high-speed
online access to residents.
The Sandy Post is the community's weekly newspaper, and is the official
newspaper of record for the city's legal notices.
